![]() For new entrepreneurs, I think it’s so important to remember that the business, whatever it is, is your idea! It’s your vision, your passion, so make sure whoever you are aligning yourself with understands that and has the same goals. For me, I was at a place where I could self-fund Lawless and it’s really empowering have full control over my business. If they are not aligned with your vision, it’s never going to work. You are dealing with these people constantly and they have a strong say in the direction of your business. You have to like these people on a personal level, not just a professional one. I learned though that working with investors is like being in a marriage. Lawless: I think when you’re young, it’s really exciting to have people offering you money and investing in your idea. What did you learn as entrepreneur about working with investors and why did you decide to self-fund Lawless? What advice do you have to new entrepreneurs who want to raise money for their startup? Now, with Lawless Beauty, you are self-funded. Robert: With your first company, Suja, you had several investors involved. It’s also been really helpful I already have a base understanding of law so I understand the verbiage and overall how the process works. Outside of just loving what I do now, there are so many factors when creating formulations for a makeup brand, plus all the legalities involved in making sure things are approved and up to standard. I absolutely apply passion to my business today. Most importantly though, I learned that I truly only thrive when I am unequivocally passionate about what I’m doing. Of course, I learned how to be disciplined, apply myself and that I’m really good at research. I think my experience at law school taught me a few things. ![]() So, without a plan, I quit and I immediately felt a wave of relief. I had zero passion for it, and I was becoming depressed, over-stressed, and overall just unhappy.
